SYLVANDER’S THEME

For Jazz Orchestra

5 m excerpt:

Full track (10:30):

Sylvander’s Theme is a piece from a larger work, currently under development for a future release. The bones of the music in this project originally came from a commission from the Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival, in which a suite of music was composed for jazz orchestra. The music was inspired by the letters exchanged between Robert Burns and Agnes Mclehose in the late 1700s, under the pseudonyms Sylvander and Clarinda. This new project sees the story reimagined through the lens of a 1980’s TV drama, and draws on the musical vocabulary and soundscapes of film and television scores that permeated my musical learning as a youngster.

A five-minute edited excerpt, gives a flavour of this particular piece; There is also a full version of the track for reference. (All of the compositions in this project are over 5 minutes in duration)

THE OCTOGENARIAN

For piano and String Ensemble

5 m excerpt:

Full track (6:30):

The Octogenarian is a piece for piano and string ensemble, written as a response to an earlier piece, The Septuagenarian, for solo piano. The early inspiration came from French impressionist composers and deliberately draws on some of the colour and texture associated with that music, while exploring the boundaries of classical harmony and jazz vocabulary.

The original solo piano work, The Septuagenarian (subtitled ‘Sandy’s 70th‘) can be heard here:

A five-minute edited excerpt is provided with scores of both the piece and the original piano work available below; There is also a full version of the track as reference.
